The founder, William T. Hornaday was very concerned about unchecked hunting in America. In 1899 he managed to acquire 7 American Buffalo (similar to the one on this postcard) for the zoo. He used these 7 buffalos several years later to repopulate the wild American buffalo population out west, which was on the brink of extinction.
